Coopworth is a breed resulting from inbreeding Border Leicester and Romney Crossbreeds in New Zealand. Coopworth is blended with other New Zealand breeds to make a fleece that is characteristically silky and easy to spin. The fibers are strong and medium to coarse in texture counts ranging from 46 -50.

Coopworth fleece is popular with handspinners who find the wool easy to spin. Fiber characteristics: The wool is silky with a "high spiral-type" crimp, a bright luster, and pointed at the tips. Staples may be round or flat. Average fleece weight: Fleece weights average 10-13 lbs. Average fiber length: The staple length is 6-8 inches. When you're just learning to spin on a wheel, you're likely to want to use a medium to slow ratio. But once you've settled into the rhythm of spinning on a wheel, you might want a faster speed for finer, shorter fibers (like Targhee or Cormo) and a slower speed for longer wools (like Coopworth or Perendale). Coopworth sheep wool can do it all. It comes in various colors and has a a sturdy medium feel, yet it's soft enough for next-to-skin wear. The staple length is about six inches and perfect for hand-spinning.

Their observation was that Coopworth had a tendency to be overspun on a wheel, while spindle spinning kept the yarn light and fluffy.
